Conditions of Ihram

IHRAM’S PERMISSIBLE ACTS

  1. Donating blood.
  2. Scratching any part of the body or the head without removing hair.
  3. Washing and using unscented soap.
  4. Seeking shade under a tree, a building, or a tent to protect from heat, and carrying an umbrella without touching the head.
  5. Wearing a belt, carrying a weapon, wearing a ring or a watch, applying unscented kohl.
  6. Wearing open sandals that expose the heels.
  7. Extracting a tooth, receiving an injection.
  8. Draping a coat or jacket over the shoulder without putting arms in the sleeves.
  9. Covering the body, except the face and head, with a blanket, quilt, or any covering.

IHRAM’S OBLIGATORY PRACTICES

  1. Entering the state of ihram before passing the miqat Boundaries.
  2. Avoiding the prohibitions of ihram.

IHRAM’S SUNNAH PRACTICES

  1. Before entering ihram, clean the underarms and groin area, trim nails, and apply pleasant fragrance.
  2. Upon entering ihram, either take a complete ritual bath (ghusl) or perform ablution (wudu).
  3. Men wrap themselves in two pieces of cloth known as “izar” and “rida.”
  4. After intending for ihram, if it is not during the disliked prayer times, perform a two-unit prayer known as the “ihram prayer.”
  5. Continuously recite the talbiyah during the period of being in ihram.
  6. Repeat the talbiyah three times.
  7. After reciting the talbiyah, recite the takbir of “teşrik,” send blessings upon the Prophet , offer supplications, and make invocations.

RECOMMENDED PRACTICES OF IHRAM

  1. Intend Ghusl for Ihram
  2. Use White, New, or Washed Ihram
  3. Wear Sandal-like Footwear
  4. Use Miswak
  5. Comb Hair
  6. Trim Mustache According to Sunnah

CONDITIONS FOR VALID IHRAM

  1. Intention (Niyah): Formulate the intention to enter the state of ihram.
  2. Recite the Talbiyah or Equivalent Dhikr: Utter the talbiyah (“Labbaik Allahumma Labbaik”) or engage in a dhikr (remembrance) that serves as a substitute for the talbiyah.

The Prophet (SAW) said, “There is no Muslim who recites the talbiyah that the stones, trees, and dry earth around him do not also recite it, up to the furthest limit of the Earth, in the east and the west.” (Tirmidhi, Hajj, 828)
