The Cemetery of Mecca is located near Jannat al-Mu’alla and approximately 2 km north of the Harem al-Shareef, on a commanding hill overlooking the city. Due to the tradition of early times when night guards responsible for maintaining the security of Mecca used to gather on this hill to change shifts, it is also known as “Masjid al-Hurras” which means the Mosque of the Guards. Later, a mosque was built on this site and it was named Mosque of the Jinns. The first mosque on this site was constructed in 1700 by an architect named Ibrahim Aga, who had arrived in Mecca. The building constructed in 1362 (1943) was demolished in the year 2000 and rebuilt.
Prophet Muhammad (SAW) performed the morning prayer on the land of this mosque when he returned from Ta’if three years before the Hijrah. During this prayer, he recited the Qur’an, which was heard and believed by seven jinn individuals.
