A person intending to perform Hajj or Umrah, upon making the intention and reciting the talbiyah, enters into the state of ihram. From the moment of entering ihram until exiting it, certain actions and behaviors become prohibited for them. These prohibitions are known as the “ihram prohibitions.”
Ihram Prohibitions Related to the Individual’s Body:
- Applying perfume.
- Using scented soap.
- Shaving, trimming the beard.
- Applying henna, lipstick, nail polish, or similar cosmetic products.
- Cutting nails.
- Plucking or cutting hair from any part of the body.
- Shaving or trimming the hair of the armpits and pubic area.
Prohibitions Related to Dress and Attire (for men):
- Wearing a cap or turban on the head.
- Wearing stitched garments like pants, coats, shirts.
- Wearing socks, gloves, or closed shoes that cover the instep and heels.
Prohibitions Related to Sexual Activities:
- Engaging in sexual intercourse.
- Kissing or fondling.
- Engaging in speech, actions, or behaviors that could lead to sexual intercourse.
Prohibitions That Harm Others:
- Engaging in arguments.
- Engaging in disputes or fights.
- Using offensive language, insulting, or hurting someone’s feelings.
Prohibitions in the Sacred Area (Haram):
- Uprooting, pruning, or crushing naturally growing green plants and trees.
- Killing harmless animals. (Muhit al-Burhani, 2/458)
Prohibitions Related to Hunting Land Animals:
- Hunting all kinds of land animals, whether for consumption or not.
- Assisting hunters, even with gestures.
- Harming hunting animals.
It’s important to note that these prohibitions apply specifically to those in the state of ihram, and they should be observed diligently while performing the pilgrimage or Umrah.
